The sacred art of rest: Why slowing down is the ultimate power move in a fast paced world

If life feels loud lately and your soul is whispering for space… this blog post is for you. A nourishing, thought-provoking guide to help you embrace rest, restore your energy, and come home to yourself.

In a world where ‘doing more’ is viewed as a badge of honour, I feel that rest has quietly slipped into the categories of the ‘unmotivated and lazy’, or seen as a ‘guilty pleasure’- to be indulged in once everything else is done. But does it ever all get done?

Yet, what if rest isn’t just a break from productivity but a powerful means to shape how we live, love, and create?

What if those mindful pauses you’ve been neglecting could actually be the key to your happier, more fulfilled life?

Modern life is wired for speed, and it pulls us along at a relentless pace. From the moment we wake up, the push to be constantly productive, connected, and informed is quite truthfully relentless and uncompromising.

And while there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with this pace of life (we are after all living in modern times), there’s a deep and mostly undiscovered power in being intentional about rest. In fact, intentional rest – those thoughtful pauses and mindful moments of stillness – might just be the most productive thing you can do for yourself.

And here’s why.

The modern world vs. Your energy field – a battle you may not realize you’re fighting

We talk a lot about productivity, but do we every really discuss what fuels it? At our core, we’re energetic beings.

Every task, interaction, and thought impacts our energy field, and in a world constantly demanding more whether at work, in your relationships or socially, our inner reserves are often running on empty.

Imagine, for a moment, that your energy is like a bank account. Every last item on your to-do list carries a mental load, unresolved emotions, unconscious worry, negative self-talk, and even the constant noise of social media all make withdrawals, but how often do we make deposits back into this account?

The truth is, in the chase towards outward success, we’re neglecting the very resource that fuels it. Our internal energy.

Without periods of mindful rest, this energy bank dwindles. We burn out, become irritable, and even small tasks start to feel monumental. By choosing to pause intentionally and tune into your spiritual terrain, you’re not just recharging; you’re filling the well that everything else flows from.

Imagine if rest was more than something you did when you couldn’t keep going any longer. Thoughtful pauses—moments where you intentionally slow down, breathe, and check in with yourself—are like mini retreats for your spirit.

These pauses don’t need to be extravagant or time consuming; even a few minutes of deep breathing, sitting quietly, or walking in nature at lunchtime especially when you feel you don’t have 10 minutes can be truly transformative.

When you consciously create space to rest, you’re not just hitting a pause button on life. You’re allowing your mind to reset, your body to rejuvenate, and your spirit to reconnect with its essence. In this space, we find clarity, insight, and often, solutions to problems we couldn’t see when we were lost in the noise.

Rest and spiritual health –  the unseen foundation of a happy life

It’s funny, isn’t it? We learn SO much in school that we will probably never use as a grown up,  yet we don’t learn about the fundaments of being an energetic being and managing our energy, when and how to rest, how to tune into our energy, or how to care for our spiritual wellbeing.

And you probably know by now, or have undoubtedly felt through lived experience that our physical, emotional, and mental health are all intertwined with our spiritual health—the state of our inner world.

Rest, especially when paired with practices like meditation, reiki, or simply quiet moments of introspection, nurtures this inner world.

When we pause to care for our spiritual health, we create an alignment that makes life feel less like a constant uphill battle and more like a rhythm we can flow with, and naturally moves us right up the emotional scale. Imagine walking through life not just reacting to external demands but responding from a place of inner strength and clarity.

That’s the power of rest as a spiritual practice.

Redefining success –  the role of rest in unlocking creativity and meaningful action

For many, the idea of resting can feel like a luxury, or even worse, a waste of precious time. But here’s the truth: genuine productivity doesn’t come from running yourself into the ground.

True, sustainable productivity stems from a place of fullness. When you’re well rested and energetically aligned, you’re more likely to make more decisions that are not only efficient but impactful. You know that feeling after you’ve returned to work after two glorious weeks off, and you tear through your to do list, as well as the projects you’ve been meaning to get to?

Imagine operating like that in all areas of your life, all of the time!

I invite you to think of rest as the true nourishment it is. The soil that creativity grows in. It’s where ideas blossom, where inspiration finds you, and where you connect with a deeper purpose beyond just ticking off boxes.

In a world obsessed with ‘doing,’ rest is a radical act of self-respect—a reclaiming of your power and an honouring of your spirit.

The ripple effects of rest

When you’re rested and energetically balanced, everything changes, including your relationships. Burnout often makes us irritable, impatient, and disconnected.

But when you choose to rest intentionally, you become more present, more compassionate, and ultimately, a better partner, friend, and family member.

Your ability to show up fully for others is directly tied to how you show up for yourself.

Resting isn’t selfish; it’s a gift you give to those around you. At first it may feel counter intuitive to put your need for rest and downtime ahead of everyone who needs you,  but its essential for you to be able to give freely.

When you’re grounded and at ease, you’re better equipped to hold space for others, to be truly present in your relationships, and to offer support from a place of abundance and overflow instead of from depletion.

When you invest in your inner world you will experience a return on investment

In a culture that measures success in tangible achievements, investing in your spiritual wellbeing can feel like an unconventional choice.

But here’s the secret: when you invest in your inner world, the returns show up everywhere.

Your mind becomes clearer, your body feels lighter, and your spirit, once burdened by stress, feels free.

When you take time to attend to your energy field – through rest, reiki, sound healing, or simply mindful pauses – you’re making a choice to live from a place of alignment. This isn’t just about feeling good in the moment; it’s about creating a foundation for a life that’s deeply fulfilling, purposeful, and resilient.

It’s about stepping into a version of yourself that feels both powerful and at peace.

So, how do you start?

Rest doesn’t have to and shouldn’t be an overhaul of your life. I’ve outlined some simple, accessible ways to begin integrating rest as a sacred practice.

Create small moments of pause throughout your day. Set aside even five minutes to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and check in with yourself. Notice how you feel and invite yourself to release any tension.

Feeling stress and tension rise during the day? Commit to listening out for the telltale signs in your body that these emotions are rising (shoulders tightening, breathing becoming quick or shallow) and set a timer for two minutes on your phone. Dance, shake or breath deeply, whatever you feel called to do, but move the energy out of your energy field. Take a moment to feel the space you created before you carry on with your day.

Do this as often as you need. It’s such a simple and quick tip to get you out of worry and overwhelm and will over time, connect you to a powerful sense of calm and resilience. By tuning in and releasing tension as it builds, you’re not only clearing your mind but also retraining your body to recognize peace as its natural state.

Remember, each moment you release stress, you’re choosing your well-being over chaos, re- affirming nervous system regulation and aligning more deeply with your inner strength and peace.

Schedule time for mindful rest. Just as you would schedule a meeting or an appointment, schedule time for rest. Protect this time as you would any other commitment and allow it to become a non-negotiable part of your week. Start with whatever time increment feels good to you, and work your way up from there.

Do what you love, and as you start to see benefits, make the time increment longer, or more frequent or add more activities that bring you joy. This could be as simple as taking 2 minutes to listen to a song from your favourite playlist,  15 minutes for a cup of tea, or you could plan a spa day at regular intervals.

Get creative, work with what resonates,  and most of all have fun.

Explore reiki or sound healing. These practices help you reconnect with your energy field, allowing you to release what no longer serves you, provides you with a deep level of mind body rest through meditation and recharges you with fresh new energy. It’s a beautiful way to recharge on a spiritual level.

Reconnecting with nature offers a grounding, healing energy that reconnects you with the present moment. Get off that computer, or out of the house and take a walk, sit by a tree, or simply breathe in fresh air to restore your sense of balance and to help ground any nervous or stressful energy you may be experiencing.

Try to take a walk especially if you feel you don’t have the time. Ten minutes is all it takes to create a significant reset and you will  come back to your tasks with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and energy. I cannot tell you just how powerful this one thing will be in growing your energy reserves. Try it and see!

And lastly….

Rest isn’t about doing nothing. It’s about doing what truly matters. It’s a commitment to honouring yourself, your energy, and your purpose.

When you allow yourself the gift of rest, you’re not taking away from your life, you’re adding more depth, richness, and meaning to every moment.

So, dear beautiful soul, as you move through the rhythms of your day, remember that rest is sacred, and your spirit deserves to be nurtured.
